Taino Beach, every Thursday in July, transforms the shoreline into a mosaic of drums, dancing, spicy aromas, and tropical colors. It’s not just a tourist festival: it’s a celebration of the Bahamian soul. Born in 1974, the Goombay Summer Festival was created as a way to show visitors the authentic culture of the Bahamas through music, gastronomy, and folk traditions. Over the years, it has become one of the signature events of the Caribbean summer.
The term “Goombay” comes from the famous goatskin drum — the goombay drum — a fundamental instrument in traditional Bahamian music. Its deep, warm, hypnotic beat accompanies folk dances and rhythmic processions. This music was born from the meeting of African roots, Creole influences, and Caribbean island culture. It is rougher and more tribal than calypso, driven by percussion and body movement.
During the festival, sunset marks the beginning of the celebration. The stalls light up along the beach, and the air fills with the scent of conch fritters, spiced fish, fresh coconut, and local rum. Artisans, musicians, and cooks mingle with residents and travelers from all over the world. On stage, rake-and-scrape groups, local bands, Junkanoo dancers, and traditional percussionists take turns.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the festival is its “open” format: there is no barrier between spectators and performers. Everyone dances together, and the drums move through the crowd. The evenings almost always follow the same ritual: late-afternoon opening; live music and Junkanoo parades; culinary tastings; folkloric shows; concerts until midnight on the beach.
